Liverpool fans are reacting with pessimism to the side’s chances in the Carabao Cup as the Reds youth team struggles against Salzburg in the UEFA youth league.

There is much hope in the Liverpool fanbase around the future prospects of a number of academy products. However, pessimism has set in that the youth side can progress past Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup after their showing against Red Bull Salzburg today.

The Reds matched up today with Salzburg in the UEFA youth league where junior sides face the same opponents that the senior teams face in the Champions League.

Barry Lewtas put out a strong side featuring many of the players who will face Villa in the League Cup; Sepp van den Berg, Ki-Jana Hoever, Neco Williams Harvey Elliott and Elijah Dixon-Bonner are all highly rated and fans were hoping they will be a strong match for the Villains.

But the young Reds suffered a difficult first half against Salzburg, going in to the break 2-0 down. That will be especially concerning as most of the back four are considered legitimate backups for the first team.

Liverpool will be putting out a youth team managed by Neil Critchley for the League Cup matchup with Aston Villa as the senior side will be in Qatar to play in the World Club Cup championship. The Reds have two games in 24 hours and using the youngsters to fulfill their Carabao Cup obligations.

Liverpool fans will be praying that the senior Reds do much better than the youngsters in the final Champions League group game this evening; a draw to qualify and a win to top the group.
