Manchester United have been linked with a Burnley ace in a move that could have ramifications for Liverpool’s transfer business.

The Mirror has reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in Dwight McNeil as well as Bayer Leverkusen star and Reds target Kai Havertz. It was also reported that Jadon Sancho is a name on the Old Trafford shortlist, although his preferred destination is Anfield.

Burnely boss Sean Dyche has admitted that McNeil could find himself outgrowing the Clarets and moving on to bigger things – a statement that appears as if it’s paving the way for his winger to rejoin United, five years after they released him.

“We know Dwight is a player who will certainly go beyond us,” the newspaper reported that Dyche said.

If the England youth international does so, it would impact the type of deal that Liverpool are likely to do over the next two transfer windows. We all know that Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of Sancho but Havertz is a fine footballer and the club have been linked with the German for some time now.

If Solsjaer made a move for Dwight McNeil, would Utd also put in massive bids for Sancho and Havertz? They have massive funds but even United would struggle to offer three big money wingers, especially with the type of price bandied around for the Bundesliga pair.

That would leave Liverpool with a far less complex run at either one of them. With a big money player out of the way, Michael Edwards could avoid the sort of bidding war that inflates transfer fees and wage demands and concentrate on getting the next big move over the line.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Reds had run their eye over McNeil but he’s not the type of forward that would fit the system. The Burnely starlet is more of an old fashioned winger who hugs the line and delivers crosses, whereas Sancho and Havertz cut inside and score goals.

Whatever happens in January or the summer, you can bet your bottom dollar that any moves United make will significantly impact Liverpool’s plans – but it might not be in a bad way.
