Liverpool fans have no love for ex-Manchester United player and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville but they are backing him as he speaks out about racism.

There is no love in the Liverpool fanbase for Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville. However, they are backing the former Manchester United player as he tackles the issue of racism in the Premier League.

His comments came after the Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea game yesterday evening. The match was halted as the referee responded to Antonio Rudiger highlighting ‘monkey chants’ from the Spurs fans.

Neville hit the issue straight on referring to racism being accepted in the ‘highest office of the country’; a reference to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s long history of racist comments.

This wasn’t a partisan political comment either as he also referenced allegations of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. He went on to implore the FA, the Premier League and the PFA to act quickly and decisively.

However, as soon as he had finished his point, the Sky Sports presenter felt impelled to say the Neville’s comments didn’t represent the views of the company. It was a ludicrous thing to add to comments that were nothing more than staunchly anti-racist.

Liverpool fans came to Gary Neville’s support in droves on social media:

Neville is perhaps one of the most unlikely figures for Liverpool fans to back. He was a crucial part of the Manchester United team that dominated the end of the 90’s and the first decade of this Millennium.

As a Mancunian right back he got into several spats with Kopites as the two sides battled during his career. But he moral stand on this issues means Reds will put that animosity all to one side to fight against the racial abuse of players from the stands in the Premier League.
