Liverpool fans are reacting to the news that Jon Moss has been appointed to referee the Merseyside Derby in the FA Cup third round this weekend.

Oh dear. It was announced today that the Merseyside derby will be refereed by a Jon Moss – who has a history of handing out red cards to Liverpool players.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will host Everton on Sunday in the FA Cup third round and they have not been handed any help from the FA with this ref appointment. His last five occasions taking charge of the Reds have all been controversial and he has sent off three Liverpool players in that time.

Moss was in charge when Sadio Mane was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Ederson against Man City in 2017 as the Reds lost 5-0. He was then at the center of controversy later that season as he handed Tottenham Hotspur a last-minute soft penalty that led to the 2-2 draw.

He sent off James Milner a year ago as the Reds beat Crystal Palace for two yellow card offenses after he had done the same to Jordan Henderson against Watford a few months previously.

Most recently he took charge of the Liverpool win at Aston Villa that was shadowed by a VAR decision where Roberto Firmino‘s ‘armpit’ was ruled offside.

Understandably, Liverpool fans have been reacting strongly to the announcement.

This will be his first Merseyside derby in the seven years he has been a top flight referee.

Klopp looks set to ring some changes in the FA Cup despite it being against our city rivals. Takumi Minamino could make his debut after completing his £7.25 million move from Red Bull Salzburg today.
