Curtis Jones is just a younger, better Harry Wilson

Liverpool look set to allow Harry Wilson to leave the club in the summer, but never fear because Curtis Jones is here and he’s better.

The dream will die with Wilson, but it may be revived by Jones. When one Academy lad leaves and another steps up, it’s always nice when the second is even more attached to the city than the first.

And Curtis Jones is 100% pure scouse. He’s also scored a brilliant goal against Everton, so that puts him 2-0 up against Harry Wilson.

But it doesn’t really come down to that. This Liverpool squad is an interesting beast, one where there are only a select few positions that are open – the front line is one of those. But not for long.

Versatility is the name of the game and it’s what Jurgen Klopp thrives off. He’s already signed Takumi Minamino, who can play in about four positions, has taught Divock Origi how to be more than just a central forward and will mould Jones.

Wilson cuts in from the left and pings left-foot shots with murder in his eyes. That’s it. And while it’s fantastic to watch and has been successful wherever he’s been, it’s not really suited to Klopp or Liverpool.

Which is sad because there’s nothing better than seeing a homegrown starlet coming through the ranks to score goals for his team. But we need to get over that for now and concentrate on Jones and the others.

So while Wilson will leave and will probably do well for a top six side, his departure won’t leave a hole that can’t be fixed. And if he can be sold to progress the career of someone as highly rated as Jones, then that’s something we need to swallow and accept.
