A Borussia Dortmund star has humiliated Manchester United with his public rejection of them for a reason that’ll interest Liverpool fans everywhere.

Emre Can only joined BVB in January after his time at Juventus fell through – a move he turned down a Reds contract for – but gave an interview in the last few days that’ll cause joy to Liverpool fans all over the world.

He’s played five league games for the German’s this season, scoring one rocket of a shot and averaging a player rating of 7.33 according to WhoScored.com. That’s an impressive figure considering he moved there cold, having started just two Serie A games all season.

Because the German revealed that he turned down a chance to play at Old Trafford for the Bundesliga, in part because of his lasting allegiance to Anfield.

Sky Sports reported that he said: “I had three offers from the Premier League alone, including from Manchester United, but I didn’t think about that for a second.”

The Mancs are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit high level players, especially as they are sliding down the ladder of attractive destinations. Why would you go and struggle at a toxic Old Trafford, in front of fans who are waging an attritional war against their owners, when they are other upwardly mobile sides out there?

And not just Liverpool. Dortmund are always up there, new sides in England are coming through like Wolves. Manchester City are coached by the second best manager in the world.

Manchester United just doesn’t even come into the equation.

Emre Can might find himself facing off against Liverpool if Borussia find their way past Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and the Reds survive their bruising encounter against Atletico Madrid.

They went 1-0 down in Spain but there is no reason why a packed Anfield can’t roar the side to further success.
