With the season and the inevitable cup lift on pause, it seems like a good time to reflect on what has happened so far. Here are five takeaways from Liverpool’s historic Premier League campaign.
We’re on course to win the top flight title for the first in 30 years, if the league ever resumes following the coronavirus pandemic. But that can’t take away from the fact that the Reds have embarked on an incredible two seasons in a row as they’ve kept standards high and points flowing.
After missing out, so agonisingly, on that Premier League win to the Manchester City winning juggernaut, Jurgen Klopp has kept standards high and flattened anyone in his path.
They’ve done exactly what many questioned: keep going and reach higher levels after the crushing disappointed of 2018/2019.
But anyone who had seen the Champions League performance after losing to Real Madrid following Loris Karius’s career-ruining performance shouldn’t be surprised at how they responded.
But there is always room for improvement, and that’s the way Klopp keeps the rest of the squad on their toes. Read on for five takeaways from Liverpool’s campaign.
Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah deserved to named alongside the best
After both finishing top five in the Ballon D’or, Liverpool’s wingers look destined for more individual and team success.
Even though he has developed many critics for his play this season, Mohamed Salah has still put up efficient numbers. He has quietly scored 20 goals and produced 9 assists in all competition thus far.

The criticism of Salah’s play demonstrates how much his reputation has grown in recent years. Given Liverpool’s success, the Egyptian is on pace for another high Ballon D’or finish in a season that is considered a ‘disappointment’ for him.
Sadio Mane’s stellar season also adds to Salah’s season going under the radar. So far, Mane has put up 18 goals and 12 assists in all competitions while playing 400 minutes less than his Egyptian teammate.
The Senegalese winger has managed to follow-up the best season of his career with an even better one. His spectacular play has earned him praise from all of the football world, including Lionel Messi. Mane shows no signs of slowing down either as he continues to put the Anfield faithful in awe every week.
There has been a lot of discussion between fans about Mane vs Salah; but with Liverpool’s success and continued star-level play from both, it’s time that their names get discussed alongside the best in the world—not just each other.
