Liverpool forward Divock Origi is happy to warm the bench and doesn’t want a move away from Anfield in the summer.

This is a man who has divided opinion among Liverpool fans but his own mind is far less clouded: Divock Origi wants to stay a Red.

Who are we to begrudge him that? The Belgian knows what’s up, he knows this is a special team and he knows that Jurgen Klopp is going to take them places.

You don’t go 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League by sheer luck, nor do you reach the Champions League final two years in a row by accident.

Origi can see the writing on the wall and he wants to be a part of that, even if it means sitting on the bench for most of the season and picking up the odd minute here and there.

Don’t forget, he’s got that fresh five-year contract burning a hole in his pocket at well. If Divock Origi doesn’t want to leave Liverpool, he ain’t going.

This is where footballer’s ambitions get a bit messy. Everyone wants to win, especially elite players. But, they also want to play. The best thing ever would be to have both, but Origi can’t do that at Liverpool.

So now he has to make a choice. Does he play 30 games a season, or does he play 30 minutes here and there but pick up those medals at the end of it all?

According to Goal, the former Lille man has made his mind up and who are we to blame him? Unless Origi’s stubborn refusal to move means Liverpool can’t afford to sign someone who would improve the squad, such as Timo Werner, then it’s a decision we should support.

"He said:  “I am a better player than last year.  Klopp has given me the space to develop myself.“I always listen to my instinct and continue to work. We have spoken with Liverpool and we have a nice course ahead of us. I just want to get better here.“It is a project for me and I want to follow it. I don’t know how long I will do that. I feel that I am making progress, so it was a pity that the season stopped [due to coronavirus].”"

If the African Cup of Nations takes place next season, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will depart and that will give Origi the playing time he craves.

That decision to sit on the bench might pay off after all.
