Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby has made a big claim about Bruno Fernandes, but something about it doesn’t add up.
Molby, who played for 218 games for Liverpool, believes that Jurgen Klopp could do with more players like himself running the midfield.
He scored 14 league goals in his second season at Anfield as Kenny Dalglish often fielded him behind Ian Rush as a shadow striker. Dalglish pulled him up from the reserve and fielded Molby to great effect.
Things have changed at Liverpool and Klopp doesn’t need a midfielder to bag between five and 10 goals a season. Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum are the prefered three in the engine room and the manager doesn’t allow them much room to get forward.
Wijnaldum has traditionally been an attacking midfielder, but he’s been used as a more tactical, disciplined player under Klopp and doesn’t score as many goals.
Molby would know this, which makes his comments a bit more strange.
He thinks that Liverpool should sign someone like Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who has hit the ground running at Old Trafford after a protracted transfer saga.

"The Echo reported that he said: “It might hurt me to say this a little bit, but if you look at the impact Bruno Fernandes has had at Manchester United, now I would love Liverpool to sign that type of a midfield player.“A midfield player that brings something different to what Milner or Keita or Wijnaldum or Henderson brings.”"
Fernandes was named as the Premier League Player of the Month for February and has two goals in his first five appearances.
But who is to say the Portuguese international would have had the same impact at Anfield? Klopp clearly wasn’t interested in the player, or there would have been a lengtheir struggle for his signature.
And with other irons in the fire, there might not have been space in the budget for two big signings – especially if Timo Werner is brought in.
Bringing Fernandes in would require a change of system, and that’s one thing Klopp isn’t going to do. He signings those who would compliment his way of playing, not force him to do a re-think – and that’s why Molby’s comments don’t make sense.
