Leicester City’s starlet Caglar Soyuncu is tipped for a move to Liverpool.
But would it be the right move for him and Liverpool?
Jurgen Klopp has been linked with adding another young defender to Liverpool’s ranks with Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu. He joined the Foxes in 2018 from SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
Soyuncu has made over 40 appearances for the Foxes over two years but has really hit his stride under former Reds manager Brendan Rodgers. He has been a key clog of Rodger’s defense as he replaced Harry Maguire in the lineup who had left for Manchester United.
The Turkish international is known for not only his defending skills but also his tackling and timing. Soyuncu can also be seen as a quick defender for a center-back as he was rated as one of the fastest defenders in the Premier League.
Soyuncu stated he idolizes former Barcelona defender Carles Puyol and tries to model his game after Puyol.
During the early years of Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool, the team has a problem with defenders with inconsistency and injuries among may of the issues.

However, once Virgil van Dijk signed in January of 2018, the problems seem to have subsided. The only issue was trying to find someone who would partner with van Dijk.
Many options have been used to partner with van Dijk from Dejan Lovren to Joel Matip to Joe Gomez to even Jordan Henderson for one game. While Gomez has proved to complement van Dijk well, he has been injured quite often and there has not been a long stretch of the partnership.
While Soyuncu could be a viable option, I do not think he would be the best option for Liverpool. Yes, he is young and could grow into a fantastic player but so is Gomez.
If Liverpool were to search for another partner for Virgil van Dijk, I would prefer a more established option such as Kalidou Koulibaly.
Koulibaly has proven he can compete at one of the top teams in Europe but also he can play in European competitions. Soyuncu has yet to play in Champions League and has only played one full-season for Leicester as he only made eight appearances in his first season.
If Liverpool wants to continue to grow its youth and prepare for the future, then Soyuncu could be the move. However, if they want to continue to compete at the top of European football, then they would consider keeping Joe Gomez in the partnership or moving to a more experienced option.
