Liverpool miss out on Timo Werner and Divock Origi should be happy.

It appears as if Liverpool are going to miss out on Timo Werner as Chelsea have come in for the German.

But it could provide opportunity to the rest of the squad, especially those who would have been in danger had the RB Leipzig star signed for the club.

One of those players is Divock Origi, who can now be more confident of his place in the squad than he’s been all season.

Origi is a man who can divide opinion, but who has a regular habit of scoring important goals in big games.

He’s probably an underrated member of the Liverpool squad, even those his performances this season have been disappointing.

Jurgen Klopp signed him to a new five-year deal at the start of the current campaign, and that’ll probably mean his value is too high for the clubs who could offer him first team football – especially in the post COVID financial landscape.

Origi is probably closest in playing style to Werner as he’s the nearest thing to an out-and-out central striker that Liverpool have on their books.

He can be excellent on the counter-attack, and is liable to drift wide and come back inside from attacking positions.

Crucially, the Belgian international seems content with the role he’s been given at Anfield and we’ve seen few stories that link him with moves elsewhere.

Keeping Origi on the books isn’t as sexy as a deal to sign Werner.

There are now YouTube compilation videos of him, nor have there been thousands of words devoted to the Belgian.

But in terms of a squad juggling act, which is a fine art indeed, Origi might fit the bill better than the German – at a considerably reduced cost as well.

What will Werner’s collapse mean for Origi? Probably more games, a more secure role in the squad and the appreciation of the accountants.
