Liverpool are looking to sign Jadon Sancho.

That is the latest line from the Independent’s chief football writer Miguel Delany, who wrote that Liverpool are ‘monitoring’ Jadon Sancho’s current situation as Manchester United and Real Madrid also ponder a deal.

United want to sign the Dortmund star, but won’t be able to if they don’t qualify for the Champions League. If that happens and the Red Devils are ruled out of the running, Liverpool could sense their opening and swoop – said Delany.

However, there will still be problems in doing a deal.

We’ve seen that Liverpool are not prepared to blow the bank in order to land transfer targets, even those at the top of their list. We all thought a move for Timo Werner was done and dusty but it fell through on financial grounds.

Bringing Sancho to Anfield would represent a similar issue.

On top of the £80 million fee the forward commands, his wage packet would see renegotiations of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah’s contracts.

There is a lot more behind this than just the price Dortmund are asking for.

Some good news can be found from Sancho’s side of the story. The England international has spoken to Jurgen Klopp and the forward would prefer a move to Liverpool. He’s also been given assurances that there would be a space for him in the side alongside Mane and Salah.

"Delaney wrote: “Sancho himself is said to see Liverpool as a more attractive option. Klopp has spoken to the player in the past, told him how much he admires him, and said there would always be a place if Salah and Mane stay.”"

It’s exciting stuff, but it’s hard not to think that we’ve been here before with Werner. The striker was clear in his admiration for Klopp and his desire to move to Merseyside, but that meant nothing in the end.

Sancho would be a much bigger fish and would take up a much bigger slice of the budget and where there’s a will there isn’t always a way.

"But Delaney does offer a glimpse of hope in his article as he wrote: “There is also a feeling that if Jurgen Klopp does want the player that badly, funds will be found.”"
