The latest of Georginio Wijnaldum’s new contract
Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum is in positive talks.
After months of worrying about Georginio Wijnaldum, there has finally been some movement from Liverpool and the player.
Writing in the Guardian, Fabrizio Romano said the midfielder was likely to extend his Anfield stay by at least three years to 2024. His current contract expires in 2021.
This follows on news from earlier in the week that stated negotiations had started and were ticking along nicely, but we weren’t sure about the terms of the deal on offer.
Wijnaldum will turn 30 in November and this is likely to be his last lucrative contract of his career. It’ll mean Gini commits the rest of his top flight career to Liverpool.
However, the midfielder does want reassurances that he’ll be an important part of the side for the next few years before he commits to Liverpool – said Romano.
Romano didn’t give any indication on whether Gini will be due a wage increase, but did add that Liverpool don’t have a problem with the terms he’s asking for.

It appears as if things should move quickly now.
Manager Jurgen Klopp clearly rates Wijnaldum as an important part of this squad, and it shouldn’t be difficult to offer him a key role in the side for the next couple of years.
By 2023 he’ll have played for the club for seven years and will surely go down as one of the finest, modern era signings. With 177 appearances in all competitions, there’s every reason he’ll go on to make over 250 for Liverpool.
That’ll be £24.75 million well spent.
Klopp can bank on getting another couple of seasons out of Jordan Henderson and Wijnaldum and the spine of the team will remain strong, but then succession plans will need to be put into place for a future without the duo.
That might involve Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, but we’ve seen those two play together and it’s not always pretty.
