Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren solves problems.

A happy Dejan Lovren is a lovely thing to see.

It’s hard to hate this man, who is capable of the sublime and the suspect within the same frame of football.

It’s hard to hate this man, who has been through more abuse in two years than most of us would get in a lifetime.

And when you think about it, it’s wrong to hate this man because loving him solves so many more problems for Liverpool.

Squad depth is an issue for Jurgen Klopp, but a happy Dejan Lovren solves that.

We can argue that he should be sold until we’re blue in the face, but the correct course of action is to allow the Croatian to stay – if he wants to.

While there have been transfer rumours linking Lovren with moves abroad, there’s been very little about the player himself.

Now, it seems, the reasons for that have been made clear.

Lovren wants to stay at Liverpool, even if it means being fourth choice.

Anfield Edition tweeted a remark by the Echo’s writer Paul Gorst, who said that Liverpool and Klopp won’t try to force Degsy out of the club. They’ll only let him leave if the player wants to.

In many ways that’s a good thing. Convincing someone to come in from the outside to give up hope of first team football would be tricky – especially if Klopp wanted someone of Lovren’s ability.

Despite those errors, the Croatian is still a good player. His run of games in the first team ended with him replacing Joel Matip and Joe Gomez well and was cut short by injury.

This is a World Cup finalist, a Champions League finalist and a Champions League winner. That’s vital experience, which very often, money won’t buy.

He also gets on well with the rest of the squad, particularly Mohamed Salah.

If Lovren doesn’t want to leave, there’s little sense pushing him out the door. He’s the best fourth choice defender in the Premier League and he’s an excellent member of the squad.
