Liverpool man Adam Lallana will reverse the mechanism.

We’re used to players coming from Southampton to Merseyside, but there has been a little reversal of that in recent years.

Danny Ings made the opposite journey when he joined the Saints following the conclusion of his successful loan campaign, and now Adam Lallana could do the same and rejoin his boyhood team.

After the stream of stars that quit the coast for Liverpool, we haven’t seen anyone make the journey since Virgil van Dijk arrived.

But Danny Mills, speaking to Football Insider, feels that Adam Lallana will be snapped up by the south coast outfit.

"“He could even go back to the likes of Southampton. There’ll be loads of clubs looking to sign him up on a one or maybe a two-year deal, because he’s got quality.”"

Lallana is fit once more and that could do him the world of good as he seeks to extend his top flight career but a number of years.

Despite his age, Mills thinks that the playmaker could still operate at a Premier League level for two more seasons – which would make him far more attractive to clubs.

After breaking through to the first team in 2006, Lallana spent a month on loan with Bournemouth and then signed for Liverpool in 2014 for £27.90 million.

Those six years have been fairly successful and the former England international has won trophies, but there’ll always be a faint tinge of ‘what if’ surrounding him.

What if Lallana hadn’t got injured just after Jurgen Klopp made him such an important part of his side. What if the man had managed to avoid the niggles that crippled him for so long? What if, what if.

But he’ll still be able to leave Liverpool with his head held high and reflect on a good career at the top of his game. 178 appearances brought 22 goals and 22 assists, while his strike at Manchester United this season was absolutely vital.

Hopefully Adam Lallana can continue to operate at the top level and show everyone the skill and ability that made him important at Liverpool.
