Liverpool have made a huge signing.

For the first time in a while, there was a gaping ominous chasm in Portugal’s recent Nations League fixture. The absence of Cristiano Ronaldo was regarded as a national tragedy. The Portuguese icon is beloved in his home nation.

One man who didn’t listen to the foreboding comments ahead of the game against Sweden was Diogo Jota.

The new Liverpool winger took the game by his stride.

In Ronaldo’s absence, Jota was given the chance to deputise for the Portuguese captain and the Liverpool winger did it with distinction.

Diogo Jota found the back of the net twice and registered an assist to his club rival Bernardo Silva to help Portugal to a 3-0 victory.

It was the kind of performance Portuguese fans have come to expect from their famous number seven. And Diogo Jota has demonstrated that even in Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence the Portuguese team will be in more than capable hands.

His style of play was eerily reminiscent of Cristiano Ronaldo. Diogo Jota ran the show for Portugal weaving through thickets of Swedish defenders and mesmerising them in the process.

His finishes were deft and potent and he showed no mercy in front of goal.

Liverpool fans have only seen a small vestige of what Diogo Jota can do at club level but if his recent international form is anything to go by, with Diogo tipped to take on Cristiano Ronaldo’s mantle, the Reds have an exciting player on their hands.

A debut goal was yet more proof of that against Arsenal.

Given time, Diogo Jota will prove to be a bargain transfer for the Anfield outfit.

Bursting with confidence the Reds should be excited to have him in the form that he is in going into the Merseyside derby.

With Firmino also netting on international duty, both Thiago and Sadio Mane back fit, Klopp’s attacking options are ample.

Do you think Diogo Jota will replace Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal?
