After a bruising Merseyside derby against Everton, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will have to get back to the drawing board as he tries to devise a plan to beat their Eredivisie opponents.

It’ll be weird watching a Champions League game in front of an empty stadium. These are supposed to be the biggest nights of the season but it’s a reality that we’re going to have to get used to.

Ajax have made a good start in their Dutch top flight campaign and are fresh off the back of a 5-1 win over Heerenveen and can take a lot of confidence from that performance.

Liverpool are without a win in two and have struggled for clean sheets in defence, which could play into the hands of a good Ajax attack.

Liverpool team news

Klopp is going to have to get creative with his defence and midfield as Joel Matip will not play against Ajax.

It’s been confirmed that he’ll miss the game due to the injury he picked up against Everton, while Thiago isn’t available either. Obviously, van Dijk isn’t going to take to the field in Amsterdam.

Youngsters Rhys Williams, Vitezslav Jaros and Jake Cain have been included in the squad to face Ajax – who will be without Brazilian forward Antony and young defender Jurrien Timber.

Predicted Lineup

Liverpool: Adrian; Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez, Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold; Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner, Jordan Henderson; Diogo Jota, Takumi Minamino, Mohamed Salah.

Recent form

Liverpool have been pretty up and down. There were some superb wins over Chelsea and Arsenal, a breathless encounter against Leeds United and then disaster against Aston Villa.

The drew away to Everton means they’ve won three and drawn two out of the five Premier League encounters this season – while one League Cup win came as the result of an excellent performance against Lincoln City.

Ajax have also played five times in the Eredivisie and are sitting second top with 12 points, four wins and a loss.

Liverpool vs Ajax prediction

The Dutch side have got some good players and are in better league form, while Liverpool have got some serious question marks over their defence. Van Dijk’s injury is bad, but Matip missing another game represents Klopp’s worst fears in physical form.

Elite players should also shine through and the Reds have got loads of them. Robertson and Alexander-Arnold will create problems down the flank, Wijnaldum will boss the midfield and Mo Salah will give Ajax’s central defenders a real education.

This should be a close game between two sides who like to attack. Except goals and some sloppy defending, but a Liverpool win.
