Liverpool have the perfect target lined-up.

When Virgil Van Dijk pummelled to the floor and then ambled off the field at Goodison Park the portentous signs were not good. When the news of his heart-wrenching injury was confirmed the sighs of disbelief from Liverpool fans could be heard even from the moon.

The Dutchman’s absence will put a major dent in the club’s hopes of lifting a consecutive league title and their aspirations in the Champions League.

Liverpool will have to make do with the squad they have at their disposal until January at least.

However with Joel Matip‘s perpetual injuries and Joe Gomez‘s shaky form, they might be forced to dive into transfer window in January.

The Reds’ options at the back were short to begin with, and it is probably likely that they would have purchased a centre-back next summer, however that will surely be accelerated.

And according to the latest reports, Jurgen Klopp has already named the ideal candidate he wants to bring to Anfield.

Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast via the Daily Express transfer expert Ian McGarry revealed Jurgen Klopp wants the club to sign Dayot Upamecano in January. According to McGarry Klopp was interested in the RB Leipzig centre-back this summer and is one of his top targets.

The January transfer window could be the perfect opportunity for the club to pounce.

RB Leipzig are expected to demand a hefty figure. Some purport the German club could ask for as much as £70m. However the ceiling is the limit for Dayot Upamecano and the fee could be worth every penny in the future.

In the current transfer climate even such a steep sum is a bargain for a player of Upamecano’s talent.

The Frenchman has the potential to become one of the best defenders in the world and he showcased his ability in the Champions League last season.

Upamecano who was described by his first professional club Red Bull Salzburg’s sporting director via First Time Finish, as a ‘special talent’ could be the perfect transfer for the club.

Jurgen Klopp has rarely ever been wrong about a player. And if McGarry is right, the Reds should do all that they can to bring the Frenchman to Anfield.
