At 30 years of age he might be nearing retirement age, but he still has a good few years left to give at the top of his game.

However, his reputation stands to be tarnished.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract expires next summer, and the Dutchman with less than a year left on his contract is yet to sign an extension.

Negotiations have notoriously dragged on further and further with no resolution.

Despite excellent performances on the field, there must be some tensions behind the scenes.

The club will be reluctant to lose such a prized asset as Wijnaldum especially on a free. The Dutchman would undoubtedly bolster any of the Reds’ rivals and it would be a bitter blow to the club.

Nonetheless, in recent weeks, the club’s supporters have almost reluctantly resigned to the fact that the club’s ace would depart the Reds.

But there might be hope left still that Georginio Wijnaldum’s Anfield stay can be extended beyond the summer of 2021.

Writing in the Guardian renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that club are hoping to restart negotiations with Georginio Wijnaldum in the coming weeks. Romano has reiterated the Reds are still ‘hoping’ they can keep the Dutchman at the club.

Convincing Georginio Wijnaldum to stay would be a huge boost for the Reds. Wijnaldum’s lack of injury struggles, his ability to play in numerous roles makes him an invaluable asset and one the Reds will find hard to replace.

Do you think Wijnaldum will be remembered as a club legend even if he leaves on a free?
