Here’s the Liverpool injury news for Monday night.

The Reds will be keen to prevent Manchester United from gaining further ground on their title ambitions by earning three points against an excellent Southampton side.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been forced to watch his team stagnating against an opposition they were expected to beat.

Fixtures against Fulham, West Brom and Newcastle United yielded three draws. Particularly disappointing was the result against the Baggies, who have gone on to lose 5-0 and 4-0 to Leeds and Arsenal.

Southampton has drawn three and lost one of their last four games. They have only scored one goal in the process, and have played out consecutive 0-0 draws.

Southampton injury news

Jannik Vestergaard hasn’t played since the Saints 1-0 loss against Manchester City, but despite that Southampton has kept those clean sheets. Vestergaard is a key part of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s defence, but the Austrian has managed to construct a sturdy side without the Dane.

This is handy for them, because Vestergaard will be missing against Liverpool. The official club website reported that the centre-back won’t be fit enough to take part, while Nathan Redmond will also sit this one out. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy will also miss as he’s got COVID-19.

However, we may see Danny Ings take the field against the Reds. Ings has been playing like the forward we all thought he could be for Liverpool, had those horrific knee injuries not robbed the striker of an Anfield career.

Liverpool injury news

Klopp delivered some rare good news during his press conference after the Newcastle game. James Milner, Xherdan Shaqiri and Thiago returned to play against the Magpies, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has made his first appearance of the season.

More from Rush The Kop

Talking about Thiago’s 20-minute appearance against Newcastle, the official club website reported that Klopp said:

"“I think of the 20 minutes, 12 round about were brilliant and then he felt the intensity, but that’s normal.”"

While he mentioned Shaqiri as well:

"“Shaq is back and that’s, by the way, the best news – the boys are back and, as far as I know in the moment, nobody got injured, which is a very important thing.”"

Joel Matip isn’t available, but we already knew about that. There was, however, no word on Naby Keita. Keita wasn’t included in the squad for the Baggies and Newcastle squad as his injury problems continue to disrupt his Liverpool career.
