3 moments that shaped Liverpool’s shocking defeat to Burnley
Another debatable VAR call going against Liverpool
Liverpool has had plenty of questionable VAR calls going against them all season, and Thursday night was no different. In the last 10 minutes of the game, Burnley was awarded a freekick from a dangerous position.

At first, the defence dealt with it well, however, Burnley won the second ball and a lapse of concentration from Fabinho sent Barnes through on goal. Alisson was forced to rush off his line and was admittedly late to the scene.
Barnes did get there first and knocked the ball over Alisson. It was a heavy touch, and there was no way he would have retrieved the ball. Alisson did not impede the English striker’s attempt to get the ball. Instead, it was Barnes who fell on to the diving goalkeeper.
The dive made it look like Alisson caught his trailing leg when the case was actually one of Barnes trying to gain an advantage after realising his touch was too heavy.
In Jurgen Klopp’s post-match interview, he spoke about the incident.
He said: “Alisson told me he didn’t touch him, but I didn’t see it back.”
