The title is on a knife edge, what’s going on Liverpool?
By Zubin Daver
The Anfield fortress has been breached. Burnley piled on the misery for Jurgen Klopp and his men in a 0-1 defeat. The first time Liverpool have lost at Anfield in 1,369 days!
Firstly, let me dig myself a hole in the ground and bury my head in shame. We’ve been used to watching a flamboyant Liverpool side hammer goals past teams for fun. However, there seems to be a glitch in their reality somewhat similar to what happens when we play FIFA. Nothing seems to be going our way.
Once upon a time referred to as mentality monsters, Liverpool seem to have become a toothless harmless side that has run out of ideas. Possession isn’t the problem, intensity isn’t the problem, the problem is that Liverpool has not been able to score a goal in four of their last Premier League games.
Yes, you read that right, a team that has scored the highest number of Premier League goals this season has not registered a single goal in four games.
As much as I’d like to believe things will get better, I do not see how. The Burnley game was everything we’d expect it to be. It was evident that they would have nine or 10 of their players playing the low block, ensuring that there isn’t space to play cheeky passes barring one route, over their heads.
But Sean Dyche’s men love that and are built to defend crosses all day long. If I knew that, I am sure Klopp did too. However, there seemed to be a lack of another approach or game plan. (Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin are not another approach!)
Sure, he did change things up a bit, but is that all we got? It is another known fact that all teams bring their best foot forward when they play the Champions of the previous season, but again, that is not new news, it is something Klopp should have figured and accounted for.

The title race seems almost all but done. Yes, it’s just seven points (potentially). Yes, there is a lot to play for. Yes, the season is unpredictable with nine teams having taken top spot so far. But the fact of the matter is, we just aren’t good enough.
Has our system and style of play been figured out? For over three seasons our system sees most of the creativity coming from the wings. It’s either the fullbacks or Sadio Mane / Mohamed Salah who are expected to create or score goals.
Klopp made the wings a priority with the wings-backs overlapping and if that is not working, then we see the deep-lying midfielders, the centre backs or wing-backs pinging long diagonal balls hoping for an opening by switching the flanks.
I agree we’ve destroyed teams with that style of play, but it seems like history does not repeat itself.
I am aware that we are missing Joe Gomez at the back, in addition to that, we are missing the leadership of Virgil Van Dijk as well. Fabinho playing in midfield gives less defensive duty but the reality is what it is. Teams like Newcastle, Southampton and Burnley who defend with their lives have sat back, blocked the flanks, cleared the crosses and intercepted all passing lines.
In my opinion, this is not just a rough patch, it points to the fact that our style of play has been exposed and we need to make a few changes and quickly.
Jurgen Klopp, prove me wrong!
PS: The Rant did feel better, the blood pressure is normal and somewhere in my heart of hearts I do still believe we have a chance at the title.
