Liverpool are at the end of an era – the next six months will be difficult
By Roy Skillen
The 2020 / 21 season will definitely go down as one of the most frustrating in the club’s history.
Coming off the back of our first league title in 30 years, Reds fans around the world were excited by the arrivals of midfield maestro Thiago Alcantara and striker Diogo Jota – who came to a squad expected by many to retain the title with ease.
However, with more than half of the season gone we find ourselves sitting in 4th spot on the ladder seven points behind leaders Manchester City after being top of the pile ourselves on Christmas Day.
Liverpool are at the end of an era
It’s been a dramatic fall from grace thanks mainly to an inconsistent run of form that has seen us struggle against clubs in the bottom six while dominating against those in the top half.
We all know that some of these current woes can be put down to a run of bad luck with injuries and a few dodgy VAR decisions early on in the campaign. But, in truth, the spark and energy that has seen Liverpool dominate most sides over the previous three years have gone and it’s time we all accepted it.
There is no one thing to blame for this and no amount of Twitter analysis and slinging mud at players that are struggling for form will fix it. In short, it’s football, and this type of stuff happens all the time.

It is nigh on impossible to keep the same group of players competing with the intensity and desire needed to continuously win trophies year after year. The most successful clubs throughout history have accepted this process and the very, very best coaches are able to spot it early and make the necessary adjustments.
For Liverpool fans, the next six months could be difficult to bear. But we all know that in Jurgen Klopp we have one of the game’s best coaches and man managers and I for one am expecting him to ring the changes, add some fresh blood, and bring new energy to his next cycle as Reds boss.
2020/21 may not be our year, but god help everybody when the next season kicks off in August.
