Michael Edwards is a genius. He is the wizard of Liverpool. The Gandalf who wields a magic wand as he embarks on every transfer window adventure. He’s a master of negotiating bargains. And a keen eye for talent.

Over the years his relationship with Jurgen Klopp has reaped tremendous rewards.

The club’s sporting director’s renowned transfer dealings have been remarkable.

More from Rush The Kop

In January he once again came to the Reds saviour when he secured the two centre-back arrivals on the final day of the window.

Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp could have a new Alisson Becker.

However, Edward’s best transfer activity might have come earlier in the summer on the last few days of the window.

Back then the club secured the the transfer of Marcelo Pitaluga who has since become the number one goalkeeper for the Reds U23 side and has performed impeccably at times.

His tall frame, excellent acrobatic skills and ability on the ball has impressed most who have kept an eye on the club’s young reds.

And in a recent report The Athletic have proclaimed Marcelo Pitaluga as ‘the next Alisson’ at the club.

The comparisons to Pitaluga’s compatriot and the club’s current number one are obvious. Both have a similar playing style and having come from the same country it is only inevitable that Marcelo Pitaluga would be measured against his countryman.

At 17 years of age the young Brazilian has tremendous potential. The fact that he is already playing at U23 level is a huge testament to his ability and an indication he could go very far in the game.

With Adrian likely to depart in the summer upon the expiry of his contract, Marcelo Pitaluga could be made third choice behind Kelleher and Alisson for the first team.

In fact he might even catch some minutes in pre-season if Alisson and Kelleher are both occupied in international tournament duty.

It would be a remarkable rise for the young man, who will continue to excel at U23 level.

One thing is for sure, Marcelo Pitaluga has a bright future in the game and one well worth keeping an eye on.

The Reds will be hoping he can be the natural successor of the number one spot at Anfiled and save Michael Edwards a tremendous amount of cash.
