There was a time when Liverpool’s number eight was regarded as the most exciting midfielders in the world. The diminutive Guinean star was a star in the Bundesliga. He dominated with his exemplary performances for RB Leipzig which alerted the interest of the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Ultimately, Naby Keita chose Anfield as his destination.

It was a move which was greeted with plenty of excitement among the club’s supporters. Yet to this day the move has not really fulfilled the hype which it warranted.

More from Rush The Kop

Keita has shown flashes of his brilliance. It is undeniable that when the Guinean plays the Reds just look better in transition and surging forward.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool need a spark.

Keita is a key cog in Klopp’s midfield and one who can also pop up with goals and assists in the right moments.

But since arriving at Anfield, he has spent more time on the treatment table than on the Anfield turf.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that is about to change.

The club have been careful in managing Naby Keita’s latest injury problems. They have been reluctant to rush him back too soon and the Guinean will not even be available to face his former side in Budapest on Tuesday night.

The midfield has been an area where the Reds have struggled as they’ve incurred 6 defeats in their last 10 games since the turn of the year.

They have lacked a creative edge and somebody to ignite a spark to help Jurgen Klopp’s side out of their rut.

Naby Keita when fit could be exactly that man.

It is no coincidence Liverpool’s biggest victory of the season over Crystal Palace was masterminded by the presence of Naby Keita.

Keita is a dribbler. He can find passes and break into the final third by marauding past his opponents. He offers something only Curtis Jones can give to the team.

On top of that he also has a lethal shot on him from distance. He has made just 45 starts in three seasons for the Reds but in brief stints he’s looked sharp enough to score 7 goals and 4 assists.

Those goal contributions and his overall impact on the team will only improve if he is able to get a full run of games.
