Liverpool legend and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard must be careful of the Graeme Souness curse as he plots his way back to Anfield.

The Gers boss is in his first job in senior club management and is loving life. After an adaptation period, Gerrard has lifted his Rangers side to unimagined heights and looks set to conquer the Scottish Premier League.

He’s also making light work of the Europa League, especially in light of his demolition of Royal Antwerp.

Liverpool aren’t done with Steven Gerrard

The struggles of Jurgen Klopp and the contrasting success of Gerrard make for an interesting comparison, but they also make for some excited chatter among some of the Liverpool fanbase.

The lure of Anfield to Gerrard must be unimaginable, but he needs to be careful. In particular, the former midfielder needs to learn from the lessens of another ex-midfield star – Greame Souness.

Like Gerrard, Souness cut his teeth at Rangers and earned his move back to Merseyside on the strength of performances in Scotland. But a series of mistakes, defeats and weird decisions stripped him of his hero status and ground his reputation to dust.

We’re not saying that Gerrard would give exclusive interviews to The Sun, and it would be hard for him to come in and try to make the sweeping changes to team culture that ruined Souness’s relationship with his squad.

For one, Klopp has implemented the type of culture that Souness probably wanted to see. Gerrard would continue with that.

But the warning is still there. Stevie G could never manage Liverpool and remain a legend. He could embark on a successful career, maybe in the Premier League, maybe beyond, and stay the icon that he is.

The lure of Merseyside will never go away and we’d love to see Stevie G back in the dugout, but fate is a fickle thing and it’s one he could learn from.
