Lewis Koumas vows to "give everything" for Liverpool after Spurs win

While the League Cup certainly does hold as much prestige as other competitions, many calling for the tournament to be scrapped, it remains an important platform for young talent. On Tuesday night, Liverpool commenced their Carabao Cup campaign by knocking out Tottenham, prevailing 3-1 at Anfield, with Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai the scorers.

However, it was the youngsters who caught the eye. Andoni Iraola included Trey Nyoni, James McConnell and Lewis Koumas in his lineup, the latter leading the line, affording Alexander Isak a breather. This was just the 20 year old's fifth senior competitive appearance for Liverpool, his sole previous start coming against Southampton in the FA Cup all the way back in February 2024.

Despite his inexperience, the Welshman was named player of the match, absolutely delighted when Gakpo presented him with the award after full time.

In between these first two starts for the club, Koumas has been loaned out to Stoke City, Birmingham City and Hull City, making a combined 94 appearances for those clubs, but he never lost faith that his future was at Anfield:

"Did I ever have doubts? No, I never showed a weak mentality... I always had the drive that I would get here. The reason for going out on loan was to prepare for this moment. It all sort of worked out... my hunger has always been there. My hunger comes from representing Liverpool Football Club. Wanting to give everything for the best club in the world."

After full time, Koumas was spotted walking through the mixed zone on face time, stating that "it was my mum, she was here tonight with my nan, my granddad and my sister... they were buzzing". It has been clear from pretty early on that the forward is in Iraola's plans. He started pre-season friendlies against both Wrexham and Monaco, introduced at half time against Sunderland and Leeds too.

Since the competitive action has begun too, Koumas has made his Premier League debut against Newcastle, before appearing in the Champions League for the first time when Atlético Madrid visited Anfield, both late cameos off the bench. Thus, with games coming thick and fast, and forward options somewhat limited, expect Koumas to continue to feature.

Well, if Kopites are eager to see more of what he is capable of, the 20 year old has been included in Craig Bellamy's squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. Wales face Portugal and Denmark on the road, before welcoming Norway and Denmark again to Cardiff.

Koumas has 12 senior international caps, scoring for the Dragons for the first time back in June, bagging a stoppage time equaliser right at the end of a friendly against Ghana.

Thus, while there is a lot of hype around Rio Ngumoha, and rightly so, he is not the only young academy graduate vying for minutes in attack this season.
