Liverpool goalkeeper "expected" to stay and sign a new contract

While Liverpool have plenty of work to do in the transfer window between now and the 1st September deadline, one department in particular appears pretty set in stone.

The Reds are continuing to finalise a deal to sign Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, while Andoni Iraola probably needs a new centre-back, right-back and central midfielder, depending on potential departures.

However, the new head coach is awash with goalkeeping options, possibly even overstocked in that area, and one of his back-ups is seemingly not going anywhere.

As reported by Gregg Evans of the Athletic, Harvey Davies is "expected" to extend his contract at the club, remaining a Liverpool player until January at least. The 22 year old's current deal expires in just 12 months time, so they'll be delighted to tie him down to a new one, but how does this impact the goalkeeping depth chart?

Who is Liverpool youngster Harvey Davies?

Born and raised in the city, Davies joined the academy at the age of eight, and has been on their books ever since. He featured regularly for under-age teams in high-level competitions, including the UEFA Youth League and EFL Trophy against senior Football League sides.

Despite only being 22 years old, very young for a goalkeeper, he does boast senior experience too. In 2023/24, he was loaned out to Crewe Alexandra, the Railwaymen's first-choice for much of the campaign, racking up 31 starts at League two level.

Then, last summer, he was loaned out to Crawley Town, making 19 appearances for the Red Devils, also in England's fourth-tier, albeit was recalled at the end of the winter window, having been deposed as first-choice at Broadfield.

Thus, the expectation was probably that he would go out on loan again, but Iraola and new goalkeeper coach Alejandro Rosalen have clearly decided to keep him around, after he featured against Wrexham during the pre-season tour of the US. So, where would Davies fit into the goalkeeping pecking order?

How does this effect Liverpool's other goalkeepers?

Despite well-documented interest from Juventus, it now appears almost certain that Alisson will stay at Liverpool this summer. The Brazilian, who did miss 21 matches last season due to various hamstring injuries, remains one of the very best in the world, so will continue as the number one.

Below Alisson though, the Reds have six senior goalkeepers in their ranks, which is obviously too many, so decisions will have to be made. Well, one has already gone. Ármin Pécsi has joined TSV Hartberg on a season-long loan, starting their Austrian Bundesliga opener on Saturday, a 1-0 defeat against RB Salzburg, but making six saves.

Meantime, third-choice Freddie Woodman has signed a new contract, he will be sticking around, while it has now been confirmed that Davies is staying as well. This suggests that Vítězslav Jaroš will be on the move. He was thrust into the spotlight at Selhurst Park in October 2024, coming off the bench when Alisson picked up an injury and Caoimhin Kelleher was ill. The Czech then started a Carabao Cup tie at Brighton a few weeks later, but these are his only senior appearances for club.

Since joining Liverpool in 2020, Jaroš has been loaned out to St Patrick's Athletic, Notts County, Stockport, Sturm Graz and most-recently Ajax.

He was the Dutch giants' first-choice goalkeeper last season, before suffering a knee injury in February, including starting six times in the Champions League. With his stock pretty high, now would surely be a good time to sell the 25 year old.

This therefore leaves Giorgi Mamardashvili. After an unconvincing first season at Anfield, there have been murmuring that Liverpool are looking to loan or even sell the Georgian international, despite having paid £30 million to land him from Valencia.

Well, the fact they have decided to keep Woodman and Davies suggests this could be a possibility, albeit would be a massive risk, given how injury prone first-choice Alisson has been for some time now.
