Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge looks set to sign for West Brom on loan for the remainder of the season. One LFC legend has slammed the club for the move.

After interest from Inter Milan and Sevilla it now looks like Daniel Sturridge will be staying in the Premier League. The striker has chosen a loan move to West Bromwich Albion after offers from other English clubs including a strong bid from Rafa Benitez at Newcastle.

The player will have a medical at West Brom today. He has opted for the Baggies as it is nearer his family in Birmingham, where he grew up. While most Liverpool fans will be happy for the player to get more opportunity, there is now serious concerns about the depth of the squad for the remainder of the season.

One Liverpool legend agrees. Ex-Red Steve McManaman is also very critical of the decision to let him go in this transfer window. Add this departure to Philippe Couthino leaving and no attacking additions and it looks a strange move. On the Liverpool Echo’s podcast speaks about how he can understand why the player wants to move but that it is not the best move for the club:

"“But if I’m the manager and I can’t replace that player in time, unfortunately you have to be selfish when you’re manager of a football club. And if he’s not going to be able to replace Daniel I’d rather have him in my squad, and have him on the bench, as he’s an incredibly talented player as we’ve seen in the past.”"

This move is heavily favoring the player and West Brom over Liverpool football club. Sturridge still thinks he can make the England squad for the FIFA 2018 World Cup. Four months of goals and quality will give him a great shot at making the plane to Russia.

Despite a litany of injuries he is the only player Liverpool have on the bench who has a proven goal scoring record at the club. Dominic Solanke is yet to score his first goal for the Reds and Danny Ings is still a long way off his best after two years of injury battles.

The only possible benefit Liverpool have is that West Brom still have to face Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. If he can help the Baggies take points from that trio then perhaps it can have some value to the Reds.
