Alisson deal has one, deeper, ramification
The transfer bringing AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson to Liverpool has one, deeper, ramification.
Jurgen Klopp has done it. After months of Reds fans begging the German to sign a world class stopper, Klopp has pulled out all the stops and bought one of the best in the game.
Liverpool bagged their man for £66 million and now have the honour of counting the most expensive central defender, Virgil van Dijk, and the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the game as their players.
Many are expecting Alisson to be the missing piece of the puzzle that allows the Reds to challenge Manchester City for the title. While the spend is definitely encouraging and it’s hard not to be excited by Klopp’s moves in the transfer market, it’s important not to get carried away.

And while the deal has clear and obvious benefits, there is one that shouldn’t be overshadowed by it all. And it’s one that you need to dig a little deeper to find out, but it’s one that’s well worth the effort.
Because, and rejoice at this, Andy Carroll has finally been knocked off his perch at one of the top five most expensive Liverpool transfers of all time!
Yes, that’s right, the Geordie ponytailed express is no longer weighing heavily on our collective conscious. The January 2011 signing, who cost a whopping £36.9 million, is no longer one of the most expensive buys in Reds history.
It could have gone so much better. Two big goals against Manchester City showed glimpses of the talent Carroll obviously has, but things never worked out and that fee was massively inflated due to the last minute nature of the deal.

The names on the current top five (van Dijk, Alisson, Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah and Fabinho) are a bit more illustrious than some lad from the Toon and it should help to rubbish the myth that FSG aren’t prepared to splash the cash.
