He’s overhyped

The Turkish media hypes up a lot of Turkish players for obvious reasons. However, there are a lot of factors and stats to keep in mind.

I mean, caling him the Turkish Messi is just so far fetched that it’s unfortunate that other respectable outlets are even re-posting the same thing. They’ve said that about Emre Mor as of most recently, and look how that turned out.

If a player has 10-15 games where he performs well, all sort of praises are written. Last season, some Turkish pundits were praising Ömür as the next big thing while others, more rational, were pointing out the fact that he hasn’t been tested on a big stage at all yet and it’s not even up for debate.

He hasn’t even played a single game in a European competition (Champions League or Europa League). he scored just three goals last season. This season, he’s managed just two so far and both were in the same match (in December against the team at the bottom of the table).

There are other, incredibly talented Turkish players who are worthy of keeping tabs on and clubs have already made moves to get their signature. Cengiz Ünder at AS Roma is a great example. The kid was signed for €13 million by the Italians at 19 and he’s an established regular there already. Compare that to Ömür and you’ll see it’s apples and oranges.
