Liverpool are hosting Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The German side will trot out at Anfield in the first leg of the round of 16 knockout stage tomorrow night.

In fact this will only be the fourth time the two sides have faced up in a two leg European fixture. They first met in back to back seasons between 1970-72 in first the Europa League (or UEFA Cup as it was known) and then in the Cup Winners Cup.

They have only met once in Europe’s premier competition back in 1980/81 where the Reds won on the away goals rule in the Semi-Final before beating Real Madrid to lift the European Cup for the third time.

The Germans have waited 38 years to get pay back in this competition! However there was one other competitive matchup between the sides; the European Super Cup in 2001.

Gerard Houllier’s side won the UEFA Cup in 2001 as Bayern Munich lifted the Champions League meaning the two sides meant in Monaco in August of that year.

Liverpool ran out 3-2 winners with John Arne Riise, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen the scorers. You can watch all the goals here:

If Liverpool can take a victory from this week’s game in the first leg back to Germany they will fancy their chances of progressing through to the quarter finals.
