Liverpool sporting director is lining up another huge transfer coup after reports the Reds will activate striker Maxi Gomez relegation release clause.

Liverpool could be bolstering their attack this summer after reports that the Reds could activate the relegation release clause in the contract of Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez.

The 22-year-old forward has impressed over the last 18 months, bagging 26 goals for the La Liga side. However that has not been enough to keep Celta Vigo out of the relegation zone as they slipped into 18th place at the weekend.

The Mirror are reporting that the forward has a £22 million relegation release clause that is less than half of his current asking price.

West Ham have long sought the Uruguayan striker but Liverpool have leapt in front of them and have the support of ex-Red Luis Suarez who wants his countryman to move to Anfield.

Liverpool were linked to Maxi Gomez last week after it now appears Timo Werner will likely head to Bayern Munich. The Reds are looking to add another central forward to the roster for the 2019/20 season.

This transfer seems like the perfect fit for Liverpool this summer. Daniel Sturridge is set to leave when his contract expires and Divock Origi is expected to be sold.

With Dominic Solanke already departed that leaves only Rhian Brewster as reserve cover for Roberto Firmino as a central attacker – and the English youngster has never appeared for the first team and is coming off a long-term injury.

The Reds will almost certainly add another forward and Maxi Gomez is an excellent option. He is a strong and fast goalscorer with plenty of technique. At 22-years-old this will be a move up for him but his addition won’t demand him starting over one of the current attacking trio.

He could rotate in and provide top-level cover for Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. This would be an incredible move by Michael Edwards and the second time he’s made the most of a relegation release fee after Xherdan Shaqiri arrived last year.
