The Dutch youth international arrived from Barcelona in 2015 after spending four years with the Catalonians. Prior to that he had been a part of the youth set up at Ajax.
He has been deployed on both wings and in the central striker position during his time at the Liverpool academy but there appears to be little chance of progression to the first team, hence his move to Lazio.
At 20-years-old it is a ‘make or break’ point of his career and he has yet to feature in Jurgen Klopp’s first team plans. Contrast that to 18-year-old Rhian Brewster who is being fast tracked to the senior level.
While this move is not unexpected it does leave Klopp in an interesting position heading into the summer transfer window. The departure of Adekanye on the heels of Dominic Solanke’s sale to Bournemouth has reduced the attacking numbers available to the manager.
The expectation is that Daniel Sturridge will not be offered a new contract and will leave Anfield in July while the club are still hoping to sell Divock Origi. That will leave Brewster as the only reserve team cover for Roberto Firmino.
We can expect the Reds to venture into the transfer market for another attacking option in the coming months. Maxi Gomez of Celta Vigo, Timo Werner of RB Leipzig and Julian Brandt of Bayer Leverkusen are the leading candidates for an Anfield transfer.
