Inject Joel Matip’s pass into my veins right now

As Liverpool took on Tottenham in the Champions League final, Joel Matip played a pass to Andy Robertson that needs to be injected into my veins right now.

I’m not really sure what to think of Matip any more, but I definitely didn’t expect to think of the lumbering defender as a model ball player.

And I definitely didn’t think he’d start spraying incredible, counter-attack starting cross-field passes to Robertson while under extreme pressure.

But that’s just what the former Cameroon international did during the first half of the Champions League final.

When Alisson Becker passed Matip the ball he had Son Heung-min charging him down from behind and Christien Eriksen stood in the middle of him and Robertson.

But then, calm as you like, and definitely calmer then every Liverpool fan everywhere, the defender lifted up his right foot and pinged a delicious ball over the head of Eriksen and into the path of Robertson.

Robbo then set off like a stallion that had just been shot on the arse with a slingshot and stung the palms of Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal. What an assist that would have been in the Scot had been able to direct his effort better.

Champions League finals are made for moments like that but honestly nobody would have predicted that Matip would be the one providing them.

As the footage is from BT Sport, we can’t embed the video in this article. But, click here and it’ll take you to a Reddit page where you can view it in all its glory.

He’s improved so much this season and it honestly looks like he could provide genuine competition to Joe Gomez for the honour to play alongside Virgil van Dijk.
