Trent Alexander-Arnold comes above Virgil van Dijk in latest rankings
By David Gate
Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold is a rising star in world football and he is now beating teammate Virgil van Dijk as the Reds’ highest valued defender.
The most expensive defender ever is Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch colossus cost Liverpool Football Club a whopping £75 million in January 2018. But if he were sold today he wouldn’t even be the most expensive defender at Melwood. That would be Trent Alexander-Arnold.
According to the latest valuations from the CIES Football Observatory they have Virgil van Dijk valued between €90-120 million (£80-106 million). Whereas Trent Alexander-Arnold is coming in as an impressive €120-150 million (£106-133 million).

That not only makes Trent the highest valued defender at Anfield but the whole world. In fact Liverpool have three of the top four: Trent, van Dijk and Andrew Robertson in fourth worth between €70-90 million. Man City defender Aymeric Laporte is third.
It is clear to most watchers that van Dijk is still the better player and the consensus best defender in the world. However the meteoric rise of Alexander-Arnold and his level of performance at just 20-years old has him now as a higher value.
Those are huge fees but they are not the biggest at Anfield. That is still Mohamed Salah who tacked on another impressive season to his record-breaking 2018/19 campaign and now has a Champions League medal to boot.
The Egyptian King comes in at a mind blowing €200-250 million but he is only the second valued player in the world behind Kylian Mbappe who is rated as over €250 million.
The French star is heavily rumored to be joining Real Madrid this summer so we may see just how accurate these valuations are.
