Dejan Lovren started his first league game for Liverpool this season and helped them to a 2-1 win against Leicester and now we’re ready to be hurt again.

If you think about it, it wasn’t really fair of Jurgen Klopp to spring this one on us. We didn’t have time to prepare ourselves, and by the time Lovren was announced in the team it was too late.

Nobody can honestly say they expected Joe Gomez to be dropped after it was announced that Joel Matip would miss Saturday through injury. Gomez is the undisputed third choice, we thought, and Degsy would have to be happy with the odd cup appearance.

Please don’t forget, this is the self-styled Best Defender In The World. A man who led Croatia to a World Cup final and a man who has had moments of class for Liverpool.

But this is also a man that a large majority of supporters would have been happy to see leave in the summer – and he nearly did. Lovren probably will go this summer, but after his performance against Leicester we’re ready to be hurt again.

The former Southampton defender belongs firmly in the ‘on his day’ category of player. This isn’t a classification limited to just defenders, and Liverpool have had their fair share of footballers who could light things up ‘on his day’.

Lovren’s problem is that we never knew how many days he would have, when he would have those days or even if those days would last the whole day. The team is better without him in it, yet he can still have those moments when you forget all the hurt (if anyone can forget that Tottenham game) and prepare your heart for another breaking.

All we can hope is that Klopp also knows this, and is kind enough to us all that he keeps that to a minimum. So hurry back Matip, we can’t take the hope any longer.
