Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott is rising through the ranks and has now overtaken Rhian Brewster for a spot on the Reds’ bench.

Harvey Elliott has impressed every one since signing for Liverpool Football Club this summer. Now he has risen to such a degree that he has overtaken Rhian Brewster in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.

The manager is still a huge fan of Brewster. Since the youngster burst on the scene as top scorer for England at the Under-17’s World Cup, he has been on a fast track to the first team.

That progress was slowed by missing almost a year to injury, but the manager’s commitment to him did not waiver and he was involved in the Champions League winning squad and included in the early games this season.

However, the impressive start by Elliott to his Anfield career means that Brewster is not the only English phenom pushing for a first team place.

It was interesting to see that for Saturday’s Premier League victory over Leicester City that it was the 16-year-old who made the bench while Brewster missed out.

With Divock Origi back from injury to be the first choice attacking replacement, Klopp opted for Elliott to be his second option with Xherdan Shaqiri still missing and Naby Keita easing back to fitness.

Some of that is down to position and versatility. Like Origi, Brewster is best as a central attacker. Therefore, Klopp plumped for an attacker like Elliott who is more suited to the wing. Especially as Adam Lallana has been less effective out wide in the last 18 months.

Many have been impressed with Elliott’s work rate which compliments his high technical ability; the exact combination Klopp values most in his players. Brewster is still learning some of those elements which appear to come naturally to his younger colleague.

It would not surprise me if we saw more of Harvey Elliott than Rhian Brewster on the bench going forward if all four of the first choice forwards are available.
