Liverpool: Don’t be afraid of “We’re going to win the league”
By David Gate
Liverpool fans have been heard singing “we’re going to win the league” and you shouldn’t be afraid of that being arrogant or too soon.
It started quietly a few weeks back. A handful of Liverpool fans you could barely hear singing “We’re going to win the league”.
Then in the final moments of the Reds 2-0 victory over West Ham on Wednesday you could make out every word. The commentators acknowledged it and Jurgen Klopp was asked about it: “We’re going to win the league”.

Among the fanbase and on social media there are many Kopites who are very hesitant, even angry, that we would sing this now: LFC need 24 more points to clinch the league, it is not over and will be at least a month or two before it can be.
The two main arguments against singing it are that it is arrogant and will bite us on the arse if we blow it. Perhaps a little superstition and fear of complacency also.
Let’s take a look it at. Firstly, it is not arrogant to sing it. I assure that every fan in the country, including Mancs, Bitter Blues and the handful of City fans believe we are going to win it. So why can’t we?
Nineteen points ahead. No losses. A squad that is coming into full fitness. A run of seven games coming up against teams that are 9th or lower in the table at present (Southampton this weekend are the team in 9th). All of which have already lost to Klopp’s side.
It is not arrogant, merely realistic, to expect Liverpool to win the league from here.
But what if we don’t? Won’t rival fans drag up our tweets and clips of our songs to taunt us? Frankly, I don’t care.
If we blow it from here, it will be the most painful sporting moment of my life and probably yours too. Jeering from rivals won’t make it any worse that blowing a lead this size.
If you don’t want to sing it that’s fine. But don’t label other fans foolish or arrogant for doing it. Because, from doubters to believers, “we’re going to win the league”.
