Liverpool have continued to get things right in the face of panic, greed and stupid self-interest.

The club have announced measures to ensure their match day staff will continue to receive the wage they would have got had the season not been suspended due to COVID-19.

This will cost the Reds around £200-£250k per game, reported Melissa Reddy, but when the club are holding people’s livelihoods in the palm of their hands it seems like a small price to pay.

Already we’ve seen people effected in ways we couldn’t have imagined when coronavirus was a blip on our radar.

It’s brought out the worst in people. It’s brought out all the selfishness, the short-minded, the greedy, the profiteers. It’s exposed some business as mindless, heartless monoliths of misery.

But, like every crisis, there have been silver linings. There are people, ordinary folk, offering to nip down the shops to help out their self-isolating neighbour.

More from Rush The Kop

We have Gary Neville making a huge personal donation to help keep the sick of Manchester healthy. He’s turned his hotel over to the NHS, who will house staff there during the crisis. Chelsea have offered to do the same.

And now we see Liverpool continuing to pay workers for a job they can’t do through no fault of their own.

We’ve seen this club get this right time and time again.

Jurgen Klopp’s statement was beautiful and now the powers-that-be are following it up with action.

When this is all over some people are going to emerge, blinking into the sun, with reputations ruined – exposed for the people they really are.

Liverpool will have their reputation enhanced. This is supposed to be a club for the working people, who cares about the working people.

They’ve shown that through their response. Others could take a look and learn something.
