A key area of need has been the backup position to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, especially with Shaqiri’s imminent exit. Although, Liverpool might already have the perfect player for this role in Harvey Elliott. It is clear that 17-year-old is too good to be playing at the youth-level which is why he is already a regular in cup games for the Reds.

In all competitions, the youngster has completed around the same amount of dribbles per game as Salah, but his 53.4% completion rate actually tops the Egyptian’s 46.8%. In the playmaking department, Elliott has created more chances and has a higher xA than potential Player of the Year Sadio Mane. Of course, this is due to weaker competition, but it is enough to show that the 17-year-old is playing beyond his age and deserves a run with the first-team.

An attacking-minded midfielder has also been a need for the Reds. Ever since Adam Lallana’s injuries started to pile up, Liverpool have been playing without a number 10. Now that Lallana looks set to leave, there is a void in that position. But instead of looking elsewhere for a replacement, Jurgen Klopp should give local boy Curtis Jones a promotion.

The Scouser has arguably been the academy’s best player this season. Though he’s still a teenager, Jones’ football IQ and technical abilities are beyond his years. In the small sample size of cup games and league cameos, the 19-year-old has blended perfectly with the first-team. His smart movements and effortless linkup play will be a perfect complement to Liverpool’s front three.

Additionally, Jones has shown an ability to play many roles in the midfield. He is an effective presser and he’s able to keep his influence in deeper roles. The Scouser has displayed his potential to be a regular first-team contributor and a fan-favorite once he is given the opportunity.

Takumi Minamino could also be a valid option for these positions. The Japanese forward is known for his versatility as he can play backup for any of the front three as well as the midfield. Through the encounters with RB Salzburg, every Liverpool fan knows how good Taki can be.

However, his time with the Reds so far has been unspectacular, but he is still getting settled with the club. Signings like Andrew Robertson and Fabinho both took months to fully integrate themselves with the club and now they are crucial members of the first-team. Given proper time and development, there is no doubt Minamino can do the same.
