Liverpool want Ruben Neves.

This is the surprising news coming out of lockdown. Apparently Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is losing patience with some of the current midfielders and wants to shake things up.

Wolver star Ruben Neves has been one of the best Premier League midfielders over the past (nearly) two seasons. The Portuguese star is an outstanding player and wouldn’t look out of place in any side across the division.

He’s been one of the cornerstones of Wolves’ success and has led them up the league this season. That’s lead to speculation about his future in the Midlands, who have embarked on an exciting project under Nuno Santo.

Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho are Klopp’s first choice central midfielders, but with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as reserves there is plenty of strength in depth.

But Milner is getting older, Keita has never impressed on a regular basis and Oxlade-Chamberlain isn’t getting regular minutes.

Could there be space for a new recruit?

According to a staff writer for News 24, Klopp could be easing Keita out of the way in order to make way for Neves.

He could cost £50 million, a fee that prevented Liverpool from signing Timo Werner, but word on the street is that the club could stretch to cover that fee.

Neves is only 23-years-old but has already made over 200 professional appearances and has played 16 times for Portugal.

Despite just six Premier League goals and four assists, the midfielder is far more influential than that and really pulls the strings.

He would certainly fit in under Klopp, and his age fits the profile of player that we’ve seen linked with Liverpool over the past few years.

However, the mini-revival of Keita could throw a spanner in the works. The Guinea international has been in excellent form during this pseudo-preseason, and could use this to cement his place at Anfield.
