It’s time to get excited about Liverpool.

Liverpool need just six points from nine fixtures  to be crowned Premier League champions for the first time, and their 19th league title overall. It will be their first in 31 seasons.

The long nightmare drought is nearly over. Any combination of Liverpool wins or draws, or Man City dropping points will result in Liverpool finally winning that elusive first EPL title.

Between now and then there is plenty of work to be done. Beginning on the evening of the 21st at Goodison Park.

If match stats from restarts are any indicator, there is no advantage to the home side in an empty venue. This is not just a minor adjustment to be considered. This is and could be crucial going forward in the restart.

Just think about it for a moment. This kind of drama doesn’t come along everyday. A few short months ago, we were riding high, albeit with a minor stumble in league play suffering just the first loss of the season away to Watford; and a less than stellar performance in our final outing before the shutdown against Atletico Madrid in Champions League.

There were a few stumbles in February and a drop in form in March, but Jurgen Klopp’s side still set a record pace setting campaign. Then the pandemic hit and paralyzed the world for these past three months.

To restart is like starting over being spotted 25 points. All past records and seasonal statistics can be thrown out the window. They mean nothing at this point.

Klopp has characterized his thinking about this restart in this timeframe (summer) as a kind of pre-season tournament. Since they will have to forgo a pre-season before the next campaign begins in late August.

As it stands, this current completion of the 2020 campaign will not end until July 25th.

This is a lot of football with only a month break before the next campaign begins. Player fitness and fatigue are in the backs of everyone’s mind.

As a result Liverpool will be looking to lock up the title as quickly as possible, to rest key players for the new campaign in August, and to showcase, and give opportunity to some youth players who are on the cusp of first team call-up.

Nico Williams (as Robertson has an apparent injury issue) is one example I’m sure we will see at some point. Harvey Elliott up front is also a possibility under consideration. Leighton Clarkson in midfield is one to watch for as well.

While all this is going on, if that weren’t enough already, the transfer window is open and teams are jockeying for deals and signings.

All eyes will be on the Man City v Arsenal match come Wednesday evening. If Arsenal can manage to come away with three points. Liverpool can claim the silverware with a win at Goodison on Sunday.
