A Liverpool transfer target has reached a verbal agreement with a club as he looks to move on in the summer.

The Reds have been busy over the past few weeks, bringing in Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on deadline day. However, sporting director Michael Edwards likes to plan for the future and will have been tracking targets for some time.

Liverpool don’t normally sign players over the age of 25 but they broke the mould for Bayern Munich star Thiago. While that move hasn’t pulled up any trees just yet, it could yet bear fruit.

Liverpool still want David Alaba

Jurgen Klopp could be casting a glance back to the Bundesliga for Munich man David Alaba, even if he has a verbal agreement with Real Madrid.

Guardian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Madrid are putting the final touches on a contract for Alaba, even if Liverpool are still trying to convince the Austrian to give up Spain for England.

"In a tweet, Romano wrote: “David Alaba has reached a verbal agreement with Real Madrid since the beginning of January.“His pre-contract until June 2025 is ‘almost ready’ – not signed yet. Chelsea, Liverpool as other clubs are still trying to convince him… but Alaba’s priority is joining Real Madrid.”"

Chelsea are also interested in Alaba, but his first choice right now would be a move to Madrid. As long as that agreement stays verbal and doesn’t become legal, then Edwards and Klopp have a chance.

Alaba would be an incredible signing to make. He’s an elite footballer who can operate well in a number of positions, including at centre-back and left-back. The Austrian is a proven winner, can cover a number of positions the Reds are currently lacking in.

Would Liverpool be able to afford it?

There’s no doubt that Alaba would want a hefty financial package, especially as he’s at the end of his contract and no fee would need to be paid to Bayern.

The Reds have a number of stars on big money, with Thiago joining that group in the summer. With the impact of COVID-19 on finances, this could be a massive stumbling block.
