Argentine duo Cristian Pavon and Alejandro Gomez have been linked with transfers to Liverpool, but what would it mean?

Well, for a start it would mean different things. Pavon and Gomez are two different players at two different stages in their careers, playing on two different continents.

Pavon currently plays for Boca Juniors in Argentina, while Gomez turns out for Atalanta in Italy’s Serie A competition. While the former is 21-years-old, the latter is 29 and towards the final stage of his career.

Much like Alexis Sanchez, the youngster can play across the front three – although his best position is wide on the right-hand flank. He’s a goal threat and a creator that has 17 goals and 14 assists from 60 games with Boca.

This deal would be more of a long-term replacement for Philippe Coutinho, and he clearly has talent. Pavon already has two caps for his country and is in line to be in the World Cup squad this summer, according to reports.

He’s also been on the radar of Arsenal for some time, who will compete with Liverpool to bring the winger to the club. The race is on, will Jurgen Klopp and FSG have the appetite for it?

Right now, the deal would probably mean little. If Pavon was brought to the club in January it’s unlikely that he would jump ahead of Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah in the pecking order – although he could start on the wing instead of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The deal for Gomez is a bit different. As mentioned before, the playmaker is in the last few years of his prime. He also operates in behind a forward, as opposed to on the wing. If Klopp brought the Serie A man in, it would be to provide support to Roberto Firmino and competition for Adam Lallana.

During 2016/2017 Gomez had a whirlwind of a campaign, netting 16 times and registering 10 assists. He’s been quieter this season with four goals and six assists, but the quality is still there.

Both of these players obviously come with ability – but Pavon looks like the one who would fit in with the squad dynamic the best. Gomez obviously has skill, but is he what Liverpool needs right now?
