Liverpool made no signings to challenge the first team this summer leaving many feeling that this was a disappointing transfer window for the European champions.

Liverpool brought in three transfers this summer. One reserve goalkeeper and two lads who need their mum’s permission to watch a Quentin Tarantino movie. I’m disappointed and that’s okay.

I don’t know if you heard, but The Reds are the Champions of Europe. That fact brings about two realities for Jurgen Klopp, Michael Edwards and the club hierarchy.

More from Rush The Kop

The first team is already very, very good. Winning the Champions League good. Historic points total good. Therefore there are no huge needs, no chronic weaknesses. This team works.

Yet on the other hand there has never been a better time to attract top players to club. Liverpool have the money, the prestige and the potential to be even better. They have a world-class manager and fans that are the envy of every rival.

It is very hard to improve the first team – we all know that – and I saw no calls from fans to sign players that would replace any regular starters.

But is the squad perfect? Not at all. A serious injury to Andrew Robertson or Sadio Mane this evening against Norwich will put that truth into the starkest light.

Much has been made about having Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana and Rhian Brewster back this year from injury. But other injuries will happen and that trio are prime candidates to miss more time – nothing predicts future injuries like previous ones.

Man City have added three players. Spurs have restocked their midfield. Arsenal have made huge signings to try to bridge the gap. Liverpool’s season will be dependent on rotation, rest and luck with injuries.

Another quality attacker and a left back would have been ideal. Signing no-one beyond Harvey Elliott, Sepp van den Berg and Adrian is less than ideal.

Liverpool still have every chance of winning the big honors with this squad. It is a wonderful time to be a Red. No need to be depressed or despondent. And I certainly won’t whinge after every poor result or injury.

However, I wanted a little more in the transfer window because I think we need it. I hope I’m wrong about that. Now let’s smash Norwich. Up the Reds!
