Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp are plotting to end the Liverpool career of Divock Origi after they were linked to several players.

The Reds are planning for life after the Belgian, that much has become clear over recent weeks. First, Takumi Minamino was preferred to Origi when Sadio Mane came off injured against Wolves and then Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started in that inside-left position.

And now there are strong reports linking Liverpool with Norwich attacker Todd Cantwell. With Cantwell in the side and Minamino growing in importance with the start of the 2020/2021 campaign, there would no longer be any room for Divock Origi.

Maybe that’s for the best. The Belgian hasn’t been able to hold down a place in the squad since he returned from a disappointing loan spell with Wolfsburg, even if he has performed the supersub role brilliantly.

The 24-year-old is at the stage of his career where he needs regular first team football to fulfil the promise that he showed as a raw teenager at the 2014 World Cup. In 129 appearances, Divock Origi has only scored 33 goals for Liverpool and has never held down a regular starting role at Anfield.

His stats at other clubs are less than impressive, too. Wolfsburg could coax just seven goals and three assists from 36 games while Lille fans witnessed 16 strikes from 89 matches.

The education Klopp and the backroom staff have given Origi will serve him useful in the future, while the fee the club could bank would mitigate a large part of the transfer fee for Todd Cantwell. Origi has been an excellent back-up option for two seasons and provides us with some memorable moments against Everton, Newcastle United and Barcelona.

But Edwards and Klopp are plotting the end of the player and maybe it’s for the best that we let him go and enjoy his time as a regular starter.
