Liverpool face the ‘impossible’ – said James Milner as he was speaking ahead of the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

The Reds will take some confidence from their 2-1 win over Bournemouth into their must-win clash against Diego Simeone‘s ruthless mob on Tuesday night.

Atletico took a 1-0 lead thanks to their royal shithousing of Liverpool during the home leg, and now Anfield will be rocking as a whole stadium full of Reds will try to roar Jurgen Klopp’s team to a two-goal win.

Liverpool managed to lose their first Premier League game of the season against Watford, but also produced bad performances during the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Chelsea and the Champions League first-leg.

And James Milner has said that result was inevitable: “It’s impossible to be at your highest level all year, year in and year out.”

It can’t be a mere coincidence that Jordan Henderson‘s injury coincided with a steep drop in form, while Milner taking his place in the first team resulted in the first win since Henderson picked up his hamstring problem.

The leadership and composure that these two men bring to Liverpool is a vital asset, and it’s something the team will need during the Tuesday night game.

Milner also commented on the strength of the Anfield crowd – and said the whole squad would use that to fire themselves to a win: “I think obviously it’s an incredible place to play football, the fans and the stadium.”

If Liverpool concede another early goal, it could be curtains. But with the force of Anfield behind them, it would take a brave soul to bet against them turning the result around.

All they need is two goals, and with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in the side anything could happen. Klopp has stressed the desire for more clinical finishers among the side, but there are plenty of players who can make a difference in the side.
