Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has aimed a swipe at Arsenal.

The former right-back has made his feelings clear over the impending Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang contract standoff, and it’s not pretty.

Arsenal’s star striker is coming to the end of his current deal with the Gunners, and it’s unlikely that he’ll be signing fresh terms.

A staff writer for Goal, via Sky Sports, reported that Aubameyang’s current situation and the one Liverpool found themselves in over Luis Suarez have striking similarities, while Carragher believes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta needs to risk losing the Gabon international for free.

He also mentioned that Aubameyang is ‘too good for Arsenal.’

Despite his age, Aubameyang will be 31 this June, the former Borussia Dortmund striker has a clinical boot and a frightening turn of pace to go with his exceptional goal scoring record.

In 97 appearances for Arsenal, he has 61 goals and claimed 13 assists. Those goals could help Arteta propel his side back into the Champions League, said Carragher, which is why they’d be better off keeping him for one more season than selling up now.

"“It’s not easy to find goalscorers. I’d keep him – he gives Arsenal a greater chance of getting into the top four.”"

That is, of course, if the Gunners hierarchy can’t convince their man to sign fresh terms.

Carragher also mentioned that, just like with the Luis Suarez business for Liverpool, Aubameyang is too good for Arsenal. Despite wanting to build a team around the striker, the former Reds star added, that will ultimately prove fruitless as the best will always depart for bigger things.

"“There’s no doubt about it: Aubameyang is too good for Arsenal. We had that at Liverpool at times with Luis Suarez and certain players you’re desperate to keep hold of.”"

Aubameyang will probably be thinking he has one last throw of the dice to play for a top side and get regular Champions League football before he age starts to work against his. His volume of goals should get most top sides interested, even if it’s just for a short-term fix.

Luckily, Liverpool have moved on from being afraid of losing their best players every season. There was a time when that was a real possibility, but Jurgen Klopp has created a winning machine that nobody wants to leave.
