Ismaila Sarr is the worst way Liverpool can spend £40m.

That’s how much Watford will need to be offered before they part with the forward they signed from Rennes last summer, wrote the Evening Standard.

After scoring six goals during his debut campaign with the Hornets, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has decided to keep tabs on the Senegal international.

But spending £40 million on Ismaila Sarr would be an error.

In terms of squad upgrades, there are other areas of the pitch that should be looked at first. After Dejan Lovren’s left Merseyside, there is a pressing need to secure another central defender as quickly as possible.

Aissa Mandi has been looked at by Liverpool, but if there is £40 million available it could be spent on a better defender. If there’s that much money in the kitty, it could be used on a transformational signing that can drive Joe Gomez and Joel Matip forward and potentially pressure Virgil van Dijk.

Sarr looks to be a good player and one that would improve the overall quality of the pitch, but he plays in a position that’s monopolised by Mohamed Salah – while it’s far from certain that Harry Wilson and Xherdan Shaqiri are going to be moved on.

If the former Metz man played on the left, then that would be a different discussion. Sarr can play there, but is certainly more comfortable on the opposite side and it’s the area of the field he’s operated in most.

There’s no real alternative to Sadio Mane within the squad. Divock Origi continues to prove why 2019 hopes were misplaced, while Curtis Jones is raw.

£40 million could be used to sign Thiago Alcantara, a player who has been called ‘incredible’ and tipped to ‘instantly improve’ the standard of the team.

His arrival would help speed up the discussions that are being held between Gini Wijnaldum and Liverpool in regards to his contract extension. We’ve seen how this dance goes, and it rarely ends well for the club. Could it be time to sell Wijnaldum?

It doesn’t make huge sense to splash that much money on someone who’ll be a back-up. This argument was made when Norwich City quoted £20 million for Jamal Lewis, and it’s why Liverpool eventually settled for the cheaper Kostas Tsimikas.

There are other priority areas of the squad that should be looked at before we sign Sarr, or someone like him. Liverpool need another central defender, and possible even Thiago, before they even think of signing an attacker.

At this very moment, that would be the worst way the club can spend £40 million.
